Karen Fukuhara Wants to Return as Katana

Culture Elixir had the pleasure of being able to attend Houston’s Houston’s 2022 Comicpalooza. It had a lot of fun and informative panels, one of which was with Karen Fukuhara. One of Fukuhara’s most notable roles to date has been as Kimiko Miyashiro in Amazon Studios The Boys. Back in 2016 she had a role in Suicide Squad as Katana.

Suicide Squad

Suicide Squad is a superhero film based off of DC Comics supervillain team of the same name. It was written and directed by David Ayer and stars Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Scott Eastwood, Ike Barinholtz, Cara Delevigne, and of course, Karen Fukuhara.

In the film, a secret government agency led by Amanda Waller recruits imprisoned supervillains to execute dangerous black ops missions and save the world from a powerful threat in exchange for reduced sentences. Despite the film receiving very mixed reviews, it was followed by a spin-off, Birds of Prey, and a sequel (The Suicide Squad) in 2021.

The Suicide Squad

The Suicide Squad included several members of the cast from the first installment. However, Karen Fukuhara’s character, Katana, was not a returning character. Along with changes in the characters, the film also received a new director/writer, James Gunn.

During Fukuhara’s panel, an audience member asked her if she would ever like to return as the sword-yielding character. Fukuhara exclaimed that she would love to return as the character, and that she believes there is a lot of background and depth to the character that has been left to explore.
