Cathy Yan (Birds of Prey, Dead Pigs) will direct and executive produce live-action series of Paprika for Amazon Studios and Hivemind.
Paprika is a techno-thriller novel by Yasutaka Tsutsui. It follows psychiatry research establishment employee Atsuko Chiba. She uses her alter-ego Paprika to infiltrate dreams of others and treat their mental illnesses. It was previously adapted into an animated film in 2006.
Along with Yan, Ash Sarohia and Masi Oka will executive produce.
Yan recently received her first Emmy nomination on behalf of her episode of Succession, “The Disruption”. She is also the first Asian woman to direct a superhero film, Birds of Prey. Yan is also writing and directing The Freshening. She and Sarohia will also produce the film for Rewild, alongside Ali Wong and Adam McKay’s Hyperobject Industries/Gary Sanchez Productions.
