‘Wednesday’ Episode 1 Review
Wednesday is an upcoming Netflix series.
The story centers on Wednesday Addams. Following several troubling acts in school, she is sent to attend Nevermore Academy. At Nevermore, she encounters society’s outcasts: vampire, werewolves, and the like. Simultaneously, she is discovering her psychic abilities, and begins to uncover a killing spree and a mystery surrounding her parents.
The show features a lot of contrast and of course, features the classic look of each of the Addams family members. Each of the character’s designs are perfect, and they were simultaneously perfectly cast. Wednesday’s monotone outfits even follow her through a fencing match, which traditionally features white outfits. We don’t get to see Uncle Fester in the first episode, but from the teasers that have been shown, I also think he looks great.
I think that each of the Addams family member were perfectly cast. Jenna Ortega is a great actress and once again nailed her part as Wednesday. Although it was brief, Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia and Luis Guzmán as Gomez looked and played their roles amazingly. It was also fun to see Wednesday interact with a character quite the opposite of her, Enid (played by Emma Myers.)
The first episode quickly introduced the Addams family and placed Wednesday in Nevermore Academy. A lot of the episode felt dragged out and didn’t really pick up until the last third of the episode. There were also moments that felt a bit cringey, but I’m assuming it’s because this show is meant for a younger audience. Nonetheless, the episode nicely set up mysteries that I’m interested to see solved, so I will definitely be tuning in once the rest of the series is available to stream.
Wednesday releases on Netflix November 23.
