The trailer for A24’s upcoming film, Beau is Afraid was released today. It is written and directed by Ari Aster and stars Joaquin Phoenix. Additional cast members include Nathan Lane, Patti LuPone, Amy Ryan, Kylie Rogers, Parker Posey, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Hayley Squires, Michael Gandolfini, Zoe Lister-Jones and Richard Kind.

The official Beau Is Afraid synopsis reads: “A paranoid man embarks on an epic odyssey to get home to his mother in this bold and ingeniously depraved new film.”

In the trailer, we see glimpses of Beau at different stages in his life. From the trailer, it seems as if the relationship between a mother and their child will be a center point of the story. We can also see a lot of elements of surrealism throughout.

The film is set to release April 21.
