James Cameron, the director of Titanic, has a response for fans who believe Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) would have survived if he had gotten on the floating door: “You don’t know Jack”. For years, Titanic fans have argued that Jack could have lived by sharing the door with Rose (Kate Winslet). However, in the film, Jack realizes that he would risk both of their lives by getting on the door and ultimately sacrifices himself.

To settle the debate once and for all, Cameron is showcasing the scene in the upcoming National Geographic special, “Titanic: 25 Years Later with James Cameron”. He and his team will recreate the scene and test four different scenarios to see if there was a way for Jack to survive. This special is timed to coincide with Titanic‘s theatrical re-release on February 10th.

The final test in “Titanic: 25 Years Later with James Cameron” involves a life jacket and strenuous exercises for Jack and Rose. Cameron says Jack stabilizes and might have survived until the lifeboat arrived, but admits there are many variables. He adds that Jack’s sacrifice was in character as he would not have done anything that jeopardized Rose’s safety. Winslet, however, does not believe Jack could have survived.

Winslet says in December, “I don’t believe we would have survived if we both got on that door. Jack would have fit, but it would have tipped and wouldn’t have been sustainable. He could have fit, but it wouldn’t have stayed afloat.” this was on the HappySadConfused Podcast.
