Hulu’s adaptation of the best-selling novel The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson is no longer in active development.

The series was set to be produced by Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio. Keanu Reeves was set to star and Tár’s Todd Field directing.

Based on the nonfiction novel, The Devil in the White City, it tells the story of two men. Daniel Burnham, the architect behind the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, and H.H. Holmes, a serial killer who used the event to lure his victims to their deaths.

The cancellation of the Hulu series is a blow to fans of the book who had been eagerly anticipating seeing it brought to life on screen. However, this isn’t the first time that the novel has failed to be adapted. In 2004, actor Tom Cruise and producer Paula Wagner first pitched interest.

According to Variety, “the series is being shopped for to other homes.”
