Renfield is the latest film to give us Nicholas Cage in a role he was meant to play, DRACULA! Yes, we finally get to see what it would be like for Nic Cage to become the prince of darkness. The film also stars Nicholas Hoult and Awkwafina in a comedy film filled with so much stylistic action. Renfield is centered on Dracula’s familiar played by Hoult who is trying to find their own purpose. They have served the dark lord for many decades and now feel it’s time to move on and find their own path forward.

I thought the action in Renfield is the clear stand out of the film. There are many scenes here that are beautifully choreographed and also very intense. The use of blood and gore with quick action sequences make it an intense thrill ride. Nicholas Hoult and Awkwafina share the majority of these scenes and it was fun to see both of them going back and forth. I also think the relationship between the two was great to see but felt it could have used a bit more screen time to develop. Nicholas Cage really makes Dracula his own and gives a stellar performance. Cage’s Dracula is peculiar and terrifying all at the same time, so you’re left with a performance that sticks.

The comedy is blended into the action very well, but the pacing can be a bit weird at times. We have moments that feel a bit rushed with not enough time to relish. I think this would have made some of the movie feel a bit more personal and touching if the camera lingered more. Overall, however these are small nitpicks as I enjoyed the film with a packed crowd. It was such a thrill ride with the insane action shots that don’t hold back. The film was enjoyable, fun and featured some stellar performances especially from Nicholas Cage.

We give Renfield a 3.5/5 for its outrageous action sequences and memorable Nicholas Cage performance.
