Director Lee Cronin has brought the Evil Dead franchise back strong with the release of Evil Dead Rise, the first film in the series in a decade. The movie made $23.5 million at the domestic box office in its opening weekend. It wasn’t immediately clear how it would fair in its worldwide box office however. In a shock to no one Evil Dead Rise surpassed expectations by earning over $40 million worldwide during its debut weekend.

This included a $23.5 million domestic haul and an international debut of $16.8 million. With a production budget of only $19 million, the film is expected to turn a profit in the coming weeks. For comparison, the 2013 release of Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead made $25 million domestically in its opening weekend, ultimately grossing $54 million in the US and $97 million globally.

It’s safe to say that we will definitely be hearing more about deadites and books of the dead from the studio. Lee Cronin has already teased a crossover event with Ash and Mia. The film was initially set to release straight to streaming, but thankfully received a theatrical release, and it was definitely worth it just based on its box-office numbers.

What are your thought on Evil Dead Rise and did you enjoy the film?
