Alaqua Cox was at Houston’s Comicpalooza this past weekend. Cox is known for her role as Maya Lopez/Echo in the Disney+ series, Hawkeye, and will be expanding on her role as the character in the upcoming series, Echo.

How Did She Land the Role?
Alaqua explains how she fell into acting on accident, and only learned of the casting call through three of her friends who sent her the opportunity on Instagram. Her friends pushed her to audition, saying how she fit the role perfectly as a deaf, athletic, Native American woman. It was really a “pinch-me” moment when she said she was one of the final two candidates for the role. She was so excited when she finally landed the role.

Differences Between Filming Hawkeye and Echo
As excited as she was to land the role of Echo, Alaqua said it could be a bit isolating as a deaf person on the set of Hawkeye. However, filming Echo has been a pleasant change, with there being a lot more deaf cast members, writers, and coaches. She also briefly mentions her prosthetic leg, and how she was provided with multiple prosthetic legs for filming. She also hints at this playing a significant part in the upcoming show; maybe the leg will have enhancements?

Her Favorite Superhero and Supervillain
Alaqua mentioned that she would love to work with Mark Ruffalo, who plays The Hulk. She says that she is a huge fan of The Hulk, and of Ruffalo as a person, who is a strong supporter of the Native community. She also said that her favorite villain would have to be Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio), for obvious reasons.
Echo releases on Disney+ November 29, 2023.
