Story

Set in 1916, you play a French soldier called Henri Clément. After being injured in battle, you wake up to find yourself trapped in a bunker. As you explore the bunker, you discover your fellow comrades slaughtered by a monster that lurks the area.

Gameplay

I haven’t played any of the previous Amnesia games, so I don’t know how to compare Bunker to these, but as a standalone game, I had a lot of fun. The monster, called the Stalker, is attracted to the most subtle sounds, which really adds to the paranoia of the game. You have to be aware of how you explore the bunker, and even when you use items, since anything other than crouching creates unwanted attention. However, there are opportunities to hide if you find yourself in the Stalker’s presence.

As you continue exploring the bunker, you’ll discover different ways to approach your playthrough. You’ll need to collect key items to progress through different parts of the bunker, as well as ensuring that you keep the generator running. There are also items scattered throughout that can be combined to create first aid, torches, and other items. You’ll also discover more of the story, as you find notes left behind from the various soldiers and officers.

Overall

As I’ve mentioned before, I have no clue what the previous Amnesia games are like, but Bunker definitely had my heart pounding. I enjoyed the challenge of managing key items, planning routes, and discovering ways of avoiding the Stalker. Also, if you want to replay the game, you’ll be excited to know that certain key items are randomized.

We give Amnesia: The Bunker a 4/5 for its sound design and heart-pounding gameplay.
