Based on the hit Spotify podcast series of the same name The Horror of Dolores Roach is a Sweeney Todd-inspired horror/comedy series from Amazon Video.

Dolores Roach (Justina Machado) is blindly in love with her drug-dealer boyfriend, Dominic. Police raid their home and Dolores ultimately takes the fall for Dominic’s crimes. After 16 long years in prison, Dolores returns to a gentrified Washington Heights. She reunites with an old friend, Luis (Alejandro Hernandez), who lets her live and work as a masseuse in the basement under his empanada shop, “La Empanda Loca”. News of Dolores’ “magic hands” spread through the neighborhood, and Dolores seems to be thriving. Her happiness is cut short when she’s forced to extreme measures in order to survive.

The series is an easy and bingeworthy watch, with a short runtime of around 20-25 minutes each episode. There are several characters in the show, with much of it focusing on Dolores and Luis. Both were played incredibly well by Justina Machado and Alejandro Hernandez. Justina and Alejandro really know how to portray unhinged characters!

Although the show is definitely wacky and will have you laughing, it does successfully juggle a multitude of important topics related. Although aspects of the show were predictable, there was plenty of mystery to uncover. I loved the mix of humor and horror, and I was eager to see just how far the Dolores and Luis would go.

We give The Horrors of Dolores Roach a 4/5 for its acting and perfect balance of horror and comedy.

The Horrors of Dolores Roach releases July 7 on Prime Video.
