Shortcomings is based on a graphic novel of the same name. The film is the directorial debut of Randall Park and follows a struggling filmmaker dealing with his girlfriends departure to New York for an internship. Justin H Min, Sherry Cola and Ally Maki star in the film. Shortcomings had its world premiere at Sundance Film Festival and is now released in theaters.

The film really finds its way as a character study on not only our main character but society itself. At its core the film is clearly a magnifying glass at how we are all looking to not feel lonely. The main character is clearly dissatisfied with their life trajectory and try to fill that up in anyway they can. Shortcomings also showcases how some representation can be seen as regressive by some but important to others in their own community. I really loved the idea of this being explored by the film. There is this want to have more people look like you on the big screen but how do you want that to look? I think the idea is that for minorities its okay to have hiccups in representation on screen but at the end of the day there should be enough room for everyone.

The story itself was great as a character study but also was a wider lens at society as a whole. I really enjoyed how Randall Park blended comedy and drama to bring a more nuanced look at adulthood. There were many moments throughout the film that were touching as well but didn’t get overdramatic. I also really enjoyed the more intimate moments where character where the dialogue was king and just loved watching them talk which is another compliment to the cast. This elevated the film with the great chemistry they had and made it such a delight to watch.

There were moments where I felt the film deviated away from its core story to tackle various topics. The moments where the film tries to juggle too many topics is where it can get lost for me. I however think as a whole Randall Park and the cast were able to bring it all together. It’s a fun rom com that also tackles some topics that I feel need discussion.
We recommend Shortcomings for its intimate and nuanced take on what it means ‘growing up’ as an adult in today’s age. A great story about finding yourself, connecting with others and just being aware of your impact to the world. Shortcomings great commentary but also keeping its core story intact. Definitely worth checking out if you’re looking for a good rom com with a little extra.
Shortcomings is a film that we give 3.5 out of 5
