‘Blue Beetle’ Knocks It Out of the Park with Style and Heart

Blue Beetle is here making a bold statement as the first movie in the James Gunn’s DC Universe. The movie which was initially destined to go to streaming has proven to be a knockout. Angel Manuel Soto brings the character to life in not only a superhero movie but also a love letter to the Latin community. I will say from the films’ early trailers I wasn’t entirely convinced but truly believe they disservice the film entirely.

At its core, Blue Beetle is about family and love. The film’s cast feels like a real-life family with all the ups and downs portrayed so authentically. George Lopez as Uncle Rudy is a standout when it comes to the comedy. The movie is able to blend these high-stake moments and comedy very well, delivering a fun film.

The film has moments that can feel a little cheesy and silly but what comic book movie is free of those moments? I really enjoyed the Latin representation in not only the cast but also the references. There are moments throughout where the characters are talking about cultural and family moments that made me think of my own family. It made the story that much more appealing as a Mexican-American.

Blue Beetle succeeds with a very stylistic look, awesome action sequences, all while being combined with a synth-based soundtrack. It doesn’t shy away from showcasing some more mature elements, and it truly delivers when it comes to the emotions. I found myself tearing up multiple times but also smiling in during those beautiful moments.

Overall, Blue Beetle is a great start to the story of Jaime Reyes and for the new DCU. We highly recommend it for its beautiful scenes, tender moments, hilarious bits, and just a well-rounded story.

We give Blue Beetle 5/5.
