Strange Darling is a thriller written and directed by JT Mollner. It stars Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner. The film has brought a lot of buzz throughout Fantastic Fest, and after watching it, I totally get the hype. This is a film I recommend going into blindly and avoiding any sort of spoilers (don’t worry, we won’t discuss any here!)

The film begins with an opening scroll reminiscent of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, letting viewers know that this is a true story involving a serial killer. Told over 6 chapters, the story is presented non-linearly, providing plenty of moments of shock and surprise. It’s shot on 35mm film, lending to its stunning visuals. Every scene in the film is beautiful, utilizing harsh sunlight and faded, yet still vivid, colors.

The film’s two lead actors really shine. Fitzgerald’s performance was especially strong, considering the rollercoaster of emotions her character was going through. Although more subtle, Gallner was equally as impressive and maniacal. Although the film mainly centers on the two characters known as “The Lady” and “The Demon”, the supporting cast were equally as talented. Barbara Hershey and Ed Begley Jr. Play a recluse couple who wearingly offer “The Lady” refuge. Their quirky yet sweet relationship offered some moments of light in this dark film. Likewise, Steven Michael Quezada had great delivery with his lines, adding a moment of comedic relief.

It’s cat-and-mouse, non-linear storytelling really lends to the tension and thrill of the film. While it is an entertaining film, it doesn’t shy away from some serious issues surrounding dominance, consent and taking things at face value. If you’re in for a rollercoaster of twists and turns, then this is the film for you.
We give Strange Darling a 4.5/5.
