Jenn Wexler’s The Sacrifice Game is a great movie to turn on during the Christmas season if you’re itching for a good thriller with an unexpected ending.

It starts off as a typical horror murder story with a group of young adults terrorizing what seems to be random victims. While following their journey, we are also given the story of two lonely girls and their teacher spending winter break cooped up at their boarding school. Things start to get crazy in the film when the group of murderers show up at the doorstep of the boarding school with talk about summoning a demon.

The beginning of the film does take some time to build up, but this gives us a chance to get to know the three characters situated at the boarding school, setting up the friendship between the two young girls and allowing us to see more into the teacher’s personal life. On the killers’ side, we follow them on their drive to the school with a few killings done here and there. While we don’t get to know the killers like we do the students, they are fun characters to follow along and we do get more background on them towards the end once everything unravels at the school. It is interesting the way they set up these characters only to turn it all around at the end, making the final reveal even more unexpected.

To me, this movie has an excellent plot twist. This film sets up the perfect opportunity for a second viewing so you can pick up on any hints you may have missed that led up to this. The reveal was perfectly timed, giving us enough time to take in all the information they were throwing at us in the end without feeling too rushed. The kills done in the movie are quick but creative in their own ways, not overly done at all.

This is a perfect movie to throw on for a fun movie night. It takes place during winter break, so the atmosphere is perfect for those cozy holiday nights! It’ll definitely keep you on your toes wondering where it’ll go next.

We give The Sacrifice Game a 3/5.

The Sacrifice Game will be available to stream on Shudder starting December 8.
