28 Days Later is getting a new sequel. Danny Boyle and Alex Garland, the director and writer of the 2002 movie, are reuniting for 28 Years Later. The hope is to launch a new trilogy.
Boyle is attached to direct the first installment. Garland would write all three. The budget for each movie would be in the $75 million range. The pair would also produce, as would original producer Andrew Macdonald and Peter Rice. The project will be shopped around at a later time.
In the original film, Cillian Murphy stars as Jim who wakes up from a coma a month after a virus has infected the world leading to zombie-like victims. While on the run, Jim stumbles upon a group of survivors, including Selena (Naomie Harris) and cab driver Frank (Brendan Gleeson), and joins them on a perilous journey to what he hopes will be safety. Th film sparked a resurgence in the zombie genre, with projects such as The Walking Dead and World War Z. It was followed by a sequel in 2007.
In 28 Weeks Later, the film is set six months after the original epidemic. “The rage virus has all but annihilated the population of the British Isles. Nevertheless, the U.S. Army declares the danger past, and American soldiers arrive to restore order and begin reconstruction. Refugees return to British soil, but one of them carries a deadly secret: The virus is not gone and is even more dangerous than before.”
