Canadian writer/director Loveleen Kaur’s debut documentary feature LEILANI’S FORTUNE will screen at the 2024 Slamdance Film Festival. From Kaur’s newly created production company, A Missing Peace Productions, the film is part of the “Unstoppable” category, which showcases films by filmmakers with disabilities.
“Leilani’s Fortune is an intimate journey that follows Witch Prophet, a Toronto-based queer, immigrant Ethiopian-Eritrean musician, as she navigates newfound momentum in Canada and records her latest album, The Gateway Experience. After a decade of struggling as an independent artist in the margins, she finally has the validation she needs to make the album of her prophecies. With her hypnotic harmonies and genre-bending sound, she is poised to shape the next era of global Canadian artists.”
Leilani’s Fortune premiered to a sold out crowd at the Inside Out International Film Festival in Toronto where it won the Audience Choice Award for Best Documentary presented by EOne. The film has continued on to a successful festival run with screenings at Out on Film (Atlanta), Reeling (Chicago), Cinema Diverse (Palm Springs), Cinéfest (Sudbury), and won Best Documentary Award at the Orchid International Queer Film Festival Rosarito (Mexico). It will continue its festival run with upcoming screenings at Slamdance, Victoria Film Festival and Reel Out Kingston Queer Film Festival.
