Sirocco and the Kingdom of the Winds is a beautifully animated French film directed by Benoît Chieux. We follow two sisters, Juliette (4) and Carmen (8), as they traverse through the mysterious world created by their mom’s best friend. Throughout this journey, we are able to get to meet some interesting creatures including the world’s “deadly enemy” as the sister’s try their best to get home safely.
The animation style used is simple yet beautiful. The color scheme and small details sprinkled throughout the environment pull us into this whimsical world. Juliette and Carmen have adorable character designs, emphasizing their childlike demeanors while Sirocco and Selma take on more extravagant and magical designs. Every scene in this movie will have your eyes glued to the screen, not wanting to miss out on the next part of the girl’s whacky adventure.
While the movie is visually pleasing, the story and characters are also a strong point of this movie. They all go through their own emotional arcs, especially Selma and Sirocco as we get to dive further into their relationship. The story of Selma and Sirocco is the most interesting part of the film, giving us an unexpected, sweet ending that will surely cause some tears to well up in the audience’s eyes.
Sirocco and the Kingdom of the Winds is a win for animation fans of any age. It embodies the words ‘childlike wonder’ with a beautiful world and cool characters that we follow throughout the film. You won’t regret checking this one out!
We give Sirocco and the Kingdom of the Winds a 5/5.
