28 Years Later, the 28 Days Later sequel package from director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland, has landed at Sony, according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter.
Director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland have reunited to write and direct the sequel, which also comes with a Part 2, to be written by Garland. Boyle would only direct the first project, with the sequel’s director to be determined at a later stage. Cillian Murphy, whose career was launched from the original film will return as executive director; it is uncertain if he will return as an actor for the upcoming sequels.
Boyle and Garland will also produce, as would original producer Andrew Macdonald and Peter Rice, the former head of Fox Searchlight Pictures, the division of onetime studio Twentieth Century Fox that originally backed the British-made movie and its sequel. Bernie Bellew is also producing.
In the original film, Cillian Murphy stars as Jim who wakes up from a coma a month after a virus has infected the world leading to zombie-like victims. While on the run, Jim stumbles upon a group of survivors, including Selena (Naomie Harris) and cab driver Frank (Brendan Gleeson), and joins them on a perilous journey to what he hopes will be safety. Th film sparked a resurgence in the zombie genre, with projects such as The Walking Dead and World War Z. It was followed by a sequel in 2007, 28 Weeks Later.
