‘Immaculate’ Review | Holy Hell!

Immaculate reunites Michael Mohan and Sydney Sweeney after their film The Voyeurs. Their latest venture brings us to Italy as Sweeney plays a nun, Cecilia, who has moved to a new church. Cecilia is a stranger coming into a new world that seems to have some hidden secrets. We eventually will find out that it may have been best to never have come to Italy as Cecilia must battle some wicked forces.

I have to say I wasn’t the biggest fan of how the first act of this movie was handled; the scares felt cheap and predictable. It also feels like we could have gotten to know Cecilia more in this time, as well as learn more about the church, which would have enhanced the viewing. However, once the second half kicks in we see a complete 180 of the film. The scares and tension really are elevated to another level by the end.

Sweeney is great in the film and shows off how much of a scream queen she really can be. We have seen Sweeney in the hit show Euphoria and most recently the box office giant Anyone But You. It’s clear Sweeney is coming into their own as a versatile actress but in the case of Immaculate, also a producer. The story of the movie is that Sweeney had auditioned for the film years ago before it went dark. Sydney then found the writer years later and rounded up a director and studio to make the movie. Thanks to all that hustling we now have the film Immaculate. It’s clear this was a passion film Sweeney wanted made and you can see from the final result that she really pours her heart out.

I really enjoyed the religious imagery and some of the shots here feel so incredible and grand. Sweeney also has some of the most powerful moments particularly towards the end. The story gets pretty wild and crazy so there could be some triggering moments for some. I just found myself sitting there thinking they aren’t going there and next thing I know they went there. There are a lot of risks being taken and I applaud them for not holding back. Immaculate really shines in its final act and almost made me wonder why this energy wasn’t present sooner. It still however makes up for a weak start by going out strong with one of the most bat shit crazy endings.

Immaculate is not going to redefine anything with its story which has several weak moments. It will however be the movie everyone’s talking about for its ending and Sweeney’s incredible performance. All in all, it’s a decent horror film worth checking out for a fun time or if you’re a fan of the genre.

We give Immaculate 3.75/5.
