Cult favorite, Napoleon Dynamite celebrates 20 years this year, and the film’s stars, Jon Heder and Efran Ramirez were in attendance at Comicpalooza to discuss the iconic movie.
When discussing the significance of this milestone, Heder and Ramirez both mentioned how they had no idea the film would blow up the way that it did, especially since it was a small, independent film. Jon in particular mentioned how he didn’t think there would be an audience, but that once the film got into the Sundance Film Festival, that’s when things started to become more real. During the day leading up to the film’s premiere at the festival, they were busy handing out “Vote for Pedro” and “Vote for Summer” buttons, and this proved to be successful, since the film’s screening was packed. Over the years, they’ve been surprised by the wide range of fans from young to old; Jon initially thought if there were to be an audience, it would maybe have been 20–30-year-olds.

As an independent film, they delved into a lot of the film’s processes, what the hardest scenes were, and how the characters that they all portrayed were really genuine and that it required minimal acting. Some physically painful scenes for Jon in particular would have to be the steak throwing scene (which didn’t need any added sound), as well as the post-credit wedding scene. In the wedding scene, Jon says he was actually thrown off the horse! Speaking of the limited acting, Jon and Efran both talk about Lyle the Farmer basically playing himself, and how his lines were all improvised. Speaking of improvisation, Jon’s famous dance scene is not one he can recreate, since it was completely freestyled.
As for the future of Napoleon Dynamite, Jon and Efran aren’t sure. There was an animated series in 2012 that featured six episodes, and they both see this series as a sequel of sorts for the film, especially considering it included all of the film’s original actors. When asked if there’s a potential for a traditional film sequel, fans were excited, but the two honestly don’t know. However, the book hasn’t closed on the possibility.
Would you want to see a Napoleon Dynamite sequel?
