The film Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person is a French Canadian coming of age story. The movie is co-written and directed by Ariane Louis-Seize. Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person Sara Montpetit as Sasha, a teenage vampire who befriends Paul (Félix-Antoine Bénard), a boy with suicidal tendencies. The synopsis for the film can be read below

Sasha is a teenage vampire who struggles with the morality of killing people for their blood; however, after her parents cut off her blood supply, she enters a pact with Paul, a suicidal and very depressed boy, on the condition that she must spend the night helping him finish the things he still wants to do before he dies

I really found myself digging the style of this film from the get-go. You really start to understand Sasha and why she might not be your typical blood sucking vampire. A traumatic moment in Sasha’s childhood is what sends her over the edge into not wanting to kill to feed. This quickly becomes a big dilemma for her family that don’t want the young vampire to become too dependent. Sasha’s mother worries about what she will do if no one is around to help her get blood and her over reliance on them. The parallels to how parents might feel with their kids that might not be ready to fly the nest were done effectively. You really feel the love and also frustration the whole family has with one another. All of this boils down to the superb acting from the ensemble. Sara Montpetit specifically is able to balance so many emotions effortlessly. We see their internal struggle with killing and also longing to just belong with her family.

The acting from Félix-Antoine Bénard as the troubled young man Paul was subtle but effective. Felix plays the troubled young man who doesn’t know where his life is going while trying to keep it cool for his mom. It was a heartbreaking performance with some scenes that brought me to tears. You can really feel the emotions and sparks between the two young individuals Paul and Sasha. Humanist Vampire at its core is a coming-of-age film with so much humanity even though it’s about a vampire wanting to eat a human. I really loved the arthouse style from the way the film is lit and shot. Humanist Vampire also achieves showcasing not only the horrors of a vampire but also being a teenager at the same time. A lot of the feelings of loneliness and being a recluse during these times are not only applied to vampires but also humans. It makes the story that much tender and elevated when we see the two main characters find a connection.

Overall the film to me is near perfect with a great amount of humor, love, and most importantly heart. I’m excited to see where the director and the cast go next because Humanist Vampire is a great start. Although there may be some issues if you’re going for a straight vampire film I implore you to go in with an open mind. You’ll definitely enjoy this new spin on the classic tale of vampire and human falling for one another.

We Give Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person a 5/5
