First look images have been shared for Apartment 7A, courtesy of Vanity Fair. Many of the images center on the film’s star, Julia Garner, Dianne Wiest and Kevin McNally. Garner plays Terry Gionoffrio. Wiest plays Minnie Castevet and McNally plays Roman Castevet.
When discussing the character of Terry, director Natalie Erika James had this to say, “A key difference between Rosemary and Terry is that Rosemary starts as almost a hapless victim to the choices that her husband has made, and then it’s her journey of uncovering the conspiracy around her and the horror of that,” In the original, Rosemary’s aspiring-actor husband, Guy, is aware of the Castevets’ plan, while in Apartment 7A, Terry is aware of only a part of it. Early on, Terry suspects she might be the one taking advantage of the seemingly doddering old couple, but she is mistaken about that too. “For Terry, I think she almost embodies both Rosemary and Guy. Terry is both the vessel, and also kind of an active part of the Faustian exchange. There’s still a wider conspiracy around her, and she’s being made to feel complicit in her own assault, which in a sense is even more horrifying.”
The film will also explore another character from Rosemary’s Baby, including Mrs. Gardenia (played by Tina Gray).
Directed by Natalie Erika James (Relic) and written by James, Christian White (Relic), and Skylar James (The Unsound).
According to an official logline, “Apartment 7A” is “Set in 1965 New York City, and tells the story prior to the legendary horror classic ‘Rosemary’s Baby’, exploring what happened in the apartment before Rosemary moved in. When a struggling, young dancer suffers a devastating injury, she finds herself drawn in by dark forces when a peculiar, well-connected, older couple promises her a shot at fame.”
The film also stars Dianne Wiest (“Mayor of Kingstown”), Jim Sturgess (“Across the Universe”) and Kevin McNally (the “Pirates of the Caribbean” film series). Supporting cast members include Marli Siu (“Everything I Know About Love”), Andrew Buchan (“All the Money in the World”), Rosy McEwen (“Blue Jean”) and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith (“Wonka”).
Apartment 7A is a Platinum Dunes and Sunday Night production from producers John Krasinski, Allyson Seeger, Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller. James co-wrote the script with Christian White and Skylar James, and executive producers include Vicki Dee Rock and Alexa Ginsburg.
The film will debut on Paramount+ on September 27.
