Crumb Catcher is the latest film from Chris Skotchdopole that had its premiere at Fantastic Fest. The film stars Rigo Garay, Ella Rae Peck, John Speredakos, and Lorraine Farris. In the film, “A newlywed couple is held captive in a remote lake house by a maniacally optimistic inventor and his sour wife who are desperate to finance his dream project with a half-baked blackmail plot.”
Crumb Catcher was a film I went into not knowing anything about and that was the best decision. I will try to avoid as much about the plot as possible when talking about the movie. One thing Crumb Catcher does right is know how to keep amping up the tension throughout. While the film is dark it still is filled with enough humor to make it such an interesting experience. Skotchdopole is able to craft something that is truly bizarre and cringy in the best way possible. You can’t help but to want to look away at some of the characters’ decisions. However, you still keep waiting to see what’s going to happen next. This is all of course possible due to the amazing acting from John Speredakos. The character of John played by Speredakos has some of the best comedic timing. Ella Rae Peck and Riggo Garray have some amazing chemistry as the newlyweds. You really start to feel there is a true connection there with them up until the very end.
Crumb Catcher plays with different genres throughout its runtime from drama, comedy, thriller, and horror. Although its able to effortlessly bounce from one to another the film really shines when it leans into the absurd dark comedy. A lot of what makes this film enjoyable is seeing how the simple predicament gets more outlandish and absurd. I went into Crumb Catcher not knowing much and that’s exactly how you should approach this film. The less you know the better as you see the insanity that follows. Honestly Crumb Catrcher will really catch you off guard and take you on a thrill ride.
Chris Skotchdopole was able to pull together a very interesting premise with plenty of twists and turns. I could not even guess where the film was going and that’s okay. Crumb Catcher feels like those classic thrillers from the 80’s with some added surreal twists. It had points where the pacing made the film feel sluggish, but the incredible acting kept jumpstarting it. Crumb Catcher is one of those films that keeps you on your toes and takes you to some dark and twisted corners.
We give Crumb Catcher a 4/5.
