Abruptio is one of those movies once you watch, it won’t leave your brain. The surreal film which has life sized puppets is not for those willing to try new things. The film is directed by Evan Marlowe and has a pretty huge cast. The film stars James Marsters, Hana Mae Lee, Christopher McDonald, Jordan Peele, Robert Englund, and Sid Haig in his final film before his death on September 21, 2019
The synopsis from the director reads as follows:
Les Hackel (James Marsters) is a guy down on his luck who wakes to find an explosive device has been implanted in his neck. He must carry out heinous crimes in order to stay alive while trying to identify the mastermind manipulating the now twisted and strange world around him

Abruptio has a very unique way of telling its story. It almost has a dream like aesthetic that quickly turns into a nightmare. There are many influences throughout, but the film still has its own unique vision. There’s nothing quite like it from what I’ve seen that’s certain. It’s such an uneasy feeling seeing these puppets, but you can’t look away. The story has some twists and turns to keep you engaged too. I did find it to feel a bit outdated with some of the material, however. This kind of can be overlooked just by how over the top the film gets. A movie just told through these puppets can seem gimmicky, but the voice acting pushes it forward.
Abruptio has some very distinct shots and cinematography. The film does have its highs and lows but manages to balance out. It almost plays like some random video in the 2000’s someone would just randomly send you. There are some great horror legends as well that make surprise appearances in the voice cast. Abruptio definitely has all the makings to become a midnight classic
Overall, I enjoyed most of Abruptio even if it gave me nightmares. The voice cast does an incredible job, and the puppets are designed so interestingly. It loses some steam with its story, but the uncanny factor brings it together. It plays almost like a horrific and deranged soap opera. You probably won’t see anything like it this year or anytime soon though. Definitely worth watching at least once if you can handle it.
We give Abruptio 4/5.
