Emilia Pérez has been garnering a lot of buzz and excitement with the awards season. The movie won several awards at Cannes, taking home the jury prize and the best actress award for Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, Karla Sofía Gascón and Adriana Paz. Additionally, it took home four Golden Globes this past week. Despite the film’s critical success, it has also been surrounded by controversy. The official synopsis for Emilia Perez reads: ‘This odyssey follows the journey of four remarkable women in Mexico, each pursuing their own happiness. The fearsome cartel leader Emilia (Gascón) enlists Rita (Saldaña), an unappreciated lawyer stuck in a dead-end job, to help fake her death so that Emilia can finally live authentically as her true self” and undergo gender reassignment surgery.
