Zendaya (The Drama, Dune) is set to play singer Ronnie Spector in A24’s biopic Be My Baby, which will be directed by Barry Jenkins (Moonlight, Mufasa), per Deadline.

Dave Kajganich (Suspiria, Bones and All) will write the film’s script. In the film, rather than a straightforward biopic, the focus will be on the singer’s experience with the troubled producer Phil Spector.

Marc Platt, Adam Siegel, Mark Itkin, Tom Shelly, and Zendaya. Jonathan Greenfield will executive produce. Before her passing, Spector was an executive producer on the film and hand-selected Zendaya to play her. Adele Romanski and Mark Ceryak, Jenkin’s partners at Pastel, will also be joining as producers.
