Oscar nominated screenwriter Billy Ray will adapt Suzanne Collins’ upcoming prequel novel The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping for Lionsgate.

“It’s my favorite book in the series,” said Lawrence during Lionsgate’s CinemaCon presentation.

Ray adapted the first Hunger Games film.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping will revisit the world of Panem 24 years before the events of The Hunger Games, starting on the morning of the reaping of the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell. 

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is being directed by Francis Lawrence and produced by Color Force’s Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson. Cameron MacConomy will executive produce.

Production begins in July.

It is slated for release November 20, 2026.
