We are less than a month away from SXSW and with that an amazing experience to look forward to. A stacked lineup of films that are sure to makes waves once the fest gets underway. I decided to breakdown some of my most anticipated films and ones that you should put on your list.
Ready Or Not 2

Ready or Not 2 is the sequel to of course Ready or Not. In the new film we see that Samara Weaving’s character of Grace isn’t out of danger just yet. This time she is being hunted alongside her sister Faith played by Kathryn Newton. We are excited to see how much more batshit insane this will be. You throw in David Cronenberg, Elijah Wood, and Sarah Michelle Gellar and we’re in for something special. Check out the synopsis below.
Moments after surviving an all-out attack from the Le Domas family, Grace discovers she’s reached the next level of the nightmarish game — and this time with her estranged sister Faith at her side. Grace has one chance to survive, keep her sister alive, and claim the High Seat of the Council that controls the world. Four rival families are hunting her for the throne, and whoever wins rules it all.
Leviticus

Leviticus is one of my most anticipated movies ever since it was announced at Sundance earlier this year. The film also received a roaring response from the people at the fest. It was picked up by Neon and shows a lot of promise for a wide release later this year. Check out the synopsis below.
“Leviticus” is the story of Naim and Ryan, two teenage boys living in a conservative Christian community in regional Victoria. When their attraction to each other is identified by the local pastor, the pair are subjected to a disturbing conversion ritual which unknowingly releases a violent entity that terrorizes the town. As Naim and Ryan attempt to survive the bigotry of their fellow town members, they must also defend themselves against the unleashed spiritual being that takes the form of the thing the boys desire most – each other.
Hokum

If you were a fan of Oddity a couple of years ago at SXSW then you are in luck. Damian McCarthy returns to Austin with his latest horror film Hokum. Adam Scott leads the way in this horror vision that looks absolutely terrifying. The trailer was one of the best showcases I’ve seen in some time. Check out the synopsis below.
When novelist Ohm Bauman retreats to a remote inn to scatter his parents’ ashes, he is consumed by tales of a witch haunting the honeymoon suite. Disturbing visions and a shocking disappearance forces him to confront dark corners of his past.
Pretty Lethal

Uma Thurman and five ballerinas stuck in a roadside inn with a still that looks deadly? Pretty Lethal is one of those projects that sounds like the potential to become a clear favorite at SXSW. A wild synopsis as well for what’s sure to be a fire movie.
An action-packed thriller where five ballerinas, stranded in a remote forest, take shelter at an unsettling roadside inn. They must weaponize years of brutal training, turning grace, discipline, and even pointe shoes into tools for survival.
Grind

Grind is a film once we saw the still we knew it had to be on our list. A horror anthology about the modern work landscape really sparked our curiosity. Of course anything with Barbara Crampton would be a no brainer as well. Check out the synopsis below.
This horror anthology tackles the modern work landscape through four timely perspectives – the hustle culture of an MLM, the endless repetitiveness of a food delivery driver, the online horrors of a content moderator, and the unionization of a familiar-feeling coffee shop. “Grind” shows what it means to be a worker in a world defined by wealth inequality and ruled by endlessly greedy oligarchs, one not so far removed from our own.
This is a film for anyone who’s ever hated their job, had a bad boss, or felt taken advantage of at work. In other words, it’s a film for all of us.
Imposters

Jessica Rothe is no stranger to the horror genre with the fun Happy Death Day series. In the latest film she will star in at SXSW it looks like things get very serious. A missing child returns but its not the right one? Yeah wouldn’t wish that on anybody? Check out the synopsis below.
After a couple’s baby boy is taken, the desperate mother learns of a way to bring him back. However, her husband begins to suspect that what she returned with isn’t their son.
Monitor

Brittany O’Grady coming off the height of It’s What’s Inside joins another mysterious project. Monitor is one of those films I was hooked after the first sentence. I’m always interested in films about the dark side of the web and Monitor clearly is going there. Check out the synopsis below.
Maggie works as a content moderator for VueQ Moderation Services, spending her days filtering the internet’s darkest content, driven by guilt over her sister’s suicide. When Maggie blocks a cryptic video uploaded by an anonymous user, she and her team begin to be hunted by an insidious entity that haunts them through every screen in their lives.
They Will Kill You

They Will Kill You looks like a dark and cartoonish roller coaster. Zazie Beetz is fighting for her life in this cat and mouse film that doesn’t hold back. Check out the synopsis below.
They Will Kill You unleashes a blood-soaked, high-octane horror-action-comedy in which a young woman must survive the night at the Virgil, a demonic cult’s mysterious and twisted death-trap of a lair, before becoming their next offering in a uniquely brazen, big screen battle of epic kills and wickedly dark humor.
Sender

Sender is a film once I saw the cast I knew I’d be seated for this one. Britt Lower and Rhea Seehorn star in this film that sounds full of paranoia. A woman begins to receive mysterious packages with no explanation? I’m always sat for a good thriller and this one seems to promise just that. Check out the synopsis below
Julia was fired three weeks ago. She also got sober three weeks ago. She’s starting over in a suburban rental, and doing a lot of online shopping to help make the space her own, fast. When packages she didn’t order start showing up at her door — a blender, a corkscrew, her signature shade of lipstick — they feel so unnervingly tied to her past that it starts to feel like someone is watching her. The shopping site Smirk denies responsibility. But increasingly paranoid, Julia tumbles down a rabbit hole to find the identity of her anonymous sender.
Buddy

Casper Kelly behind Your Pretty Face is Going To Hell and just recently the VHS segment Fun Size is showcasing a new demented vision. Buddy premiered at Sundance to rave reviews and sounds like one of the oddest films at SXSW. It’s basically Barney if he turned demented and I’m all the way there for this. Check out the synopsis below.
A brave girl and her friends must escape a kids television show.
Obsession

Obsession is the latest film from Curry Barker who brought us Milk + Serial a couple of years ago. The offbeat and creepy vibes continue in his latest feature Obsession. A wish gone horribly wrong will send a young man on a horrific spiral. The film was praised at TIFF as well as Fantastic Fest last year. It’s definitely one to get people talking after its ending. Check out the synopsis below.
After breaking the mysterious “One Wish Willow” to win his crush’s heart, a hopeless romantic finds himself getting exactly what he asked for but soon discovers that some desires come at a dark, sinister price.
