Sony Music Latin today announced The New Sounds of Musica Mexicana, a dynamic showcase featuring emerging Mexican artists whose proposals challenge the boundaries of musical genres.
The event, scheduled for Monday, March 16, at the renowned nightlife venue Mala Fama, is part of the South by Southwest (SXSW) Festival 2026, the celebrated creative platform taking place March 12–18 in Austin, one of the most influential artistic ecosystems in the world, where music, film, and technology converge.
Designed to spotlight Mexico’s new musical vanguard, this showcase brings together artists leading contemporary and cross-border Mexican sounds, from regional roots to urbano fusion, with performers such as Óscar Ortiz, Mariángela, Ian Córdova, Poe Leos and DJ Funky Caramelo, along with a special appearance by Bu Cuarón.
Poe Leos is a singer, songwriter, and producer based in Los Angeles, born in Chihuahua and raised in Illinois. He anchors the event with a fresh and bilingual blend of Latin pop, R&B, and urban sensibilities.
Ian Córdova is a rising star in the regional Mexican scene, bringing a modern vision of traditional styles infused with youthful energy. His work connects corrido-inspired storytelling with a contemporary aesthetic that resonates across generations.
Mariángela steps into the spotlight with a fresh, creative voice that channels tradition through a modern lens. Her artistic approach highlights melodic depth and stylistic breadth, representing a new wave of women redefining what Mexican music can be for today’s audiences.
Óscar Ortiz crafts songs that cross genres and integrate regional roots with innovative production, creating a bold fusion of traditional rhythms with modern pop and electronic touches that connect with global audiences.
DJ Funky Caramelo acts as the sonic architect of the evening, blending cumbia, norteño rhythms, and electronic elements to transform each transition into a danceable journey. Her genre-bending sets create an immersive environment that highlights the event’s diverse sounds.
Special guest Bu Cuarón will close the showcase with a performance that celebrates both cultural heritage and innovation. She is an emerging singer-songwriter who released her debut EP Drop By When You Drop Dead, featuring songs in English, Spanish, and Italian. She writes and produces her own music and has been developing her artistic project since her teenage years.
