Batgirl was Un-releasable according to New DCU Boss

The announcement of the DCU slate for the future was made today by James Gunn, who revealed a number of major releases that are expected to shape the DC universe for the next decade. Despite the exciting news, it comes after several cancelled and axed projects by DC.

One project that was particularly felt by many was the axing of Batgirl, which had already been finished. The move by Warner Bros was not well received by the internet and a campaign to release the film was started shortly after. The fate of the film was left in question, but an update has been provided, which may not be what was hoped for.

Peter Safran, who is working alongside James Gunn in leading the new era of the DCU stated the following about Batgirl

There were a lot of incredibly talented people in front and behind the camera on that film. But that film was not releasable. And it happens sometimes. And I actually think that [Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David] Zaslav and the team made a very bold and courageous decision to cancel it because it would have hurt DC and it would have hurt the people involved in making it. [‘Batgirl’] would not have been able to compete in the theatrical marketplace. It was built for the small screen. And so again, you know, I think that it was not an easy decision, but they made the right decision.

It is not clear on how Batgirl would have affected the DCU. It is possible that the decision to let the project go may have been due to the movie’s ties to Michael Keaton’s Batman. Keaton’s role in Batgirl could have possibly made him a more prominent figure in the DCU, but his role in the upcoming “The Flash” movie is expected to serve as a reset to the DCU. Gunn announced today that a new Batman, along with Pattinson’s Batman, is also in the works. The axing of Batgirl remains a decision that may not be agreed upon. What do you think?
