
Netflix’s hit Squid Game was nominated for the Emmy Award for drama series Tuesday. It is the first non-English language series to be nominated for an Emmy.

Created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, the show follows a group of contestants competing for a cash prize. Contestants participate in a series of children’s games, that result in deadly consequences. After its premiere in September 2021, the show became Netflix’s most successful show to date.

Four of the main actors from Squid Game were also nominated for their performances. Lee Jung-Jae, who portrayed the debt-ridden father Seong Gi-hun, was nominated for lead actor in a drama series. Jung Ho-yeon was nominated for supporting actress for her role as Kang Sae-byeok, the pickpocket and devoted sister. Park Hae-soo and Oh Yeong-su are also nominated in the supporting actor category; Park portrayed Seong’s former classmate Cho Sang-woo, while Oh played Oh Il-nam, an elderly contestant in the show.

Along with nominations for several of the actors, series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk earned nominations in the writing and directing categories. Lee You-mi earned a nomination in the guest actress in a drama series for her role as Ji-yeong. Squid Game was also nominated for many other categories, bring its total nominations to 14.
