News of the Batgirl‘s cancellation broke yesterday. The film won’t premiere on any platform, neither theatrically nor on HBO Max.
The film was part of a company-wide effort to create content for HBO Max, but priorities have been pivoted back to theatrical releases. The film starred Leslie Grace as Barbara Gordon/Batgirl and directed by Bad Boys for Life and Ms. Marvel filmmakers Adil El Arbi and Billal Fallal.
In response to the cancellation, the directors stated, “as directors, it is critical that our work be shown to audiences… we wish that fans all over the world would have had the opportunity to see and embrace the final film themselves.” The directors continue by reminding everyone of all of the work that the cast and crew put into the film, and how disappointed they are that audiences won’t be able to experience it.
Along with Leslie Grace, the film starred Brendon Fraser, J.K. Simmons, Michael Keaton, Ivory Aquino, and Jacob Scipio, among others. Batgirl was cancelled along with Scoob! Holiday Haunt, which was a follow-up to 2020’s Scoob!
