Triangle of Sadness is a satirical dark comedy directed by Ruben Östlund.

Story

The film follows a fashion model couple, Yaya (Charlbi Dean Kriek) and Carl (Harris Dickinson). They are invited on a cruise for the ultra-rich, which at first seems like paradise. The ship ends up sinking, leading Yaya, Carl, and several of their shipmates to become stranded on an island.

Visuals

The film featured rich colors and a lot of contrast, which I think fit perfectly with the film’s mood and themes. There’s a part of the film that definitely felt like you could become motion sick like the ship’s guests. I kept hearing that it would be really gross, but honestly, it wasn’t too gross or shocking like several people have been saying.

Acting

Each actor did a great job portraying insufferable characters. I loved seeing the dynamics between all of the characters. I especially loved seeing the interaction between Captain Thomas (Woody Harrelson) and Dimitry (Zlatko Burić), which was really funny. When the characters were stranded on the island, it was really funny seeing how delusional several of the characters were and seeing the change of power dynamics.

Overall

Triangle of Sadness portrayed classism and power dynamics in a humorous and entertaining manner. It successfully creates distance between you and the characters, which some have stated as being a weakness. However, I think that Östlund intentionally did this. My only criticism would be is that I think the film could have trimmed off the beginning, which I felt was a bit dragged out. Overall, I think it is worth watching if you have the chance.
