The highly anticipated anime adaptation of Chainsaw Man released this past week. The anime’s intro features tons of film references.

Chainsaw Man creator Tatsuki Fujimoto is a huge film buff, and we can see this love in the anime’s opening sequence. The opening was directed and storyboarded by Shingo Yamashita. The opening sequence shows glimpses of these inspirations and then cuts to scenes of the cast in a movie theater. There are references to a range of movies including The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Pulp Fiction, and No Country for Old Men.

No Country for Old Men

Some other films that are referenced:

  • Sadako vs. Kayako
  • Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
  • Attack of the Killer Tomatoes
  • Don’t Look Up/Joyūrei
  • Jacob’s Ladder
  • Constantine
  • The Big Lebowski
Pulp Fiction

The opening also includes a metaphoric image of the difference between ignorance and knowledge. It also includes an homage to Fujimoto’s other manga, Goodbye, Eri.

The first episode of Chainsaw Man released October 11 and is available on Crunchyroll and Hulu. It will release every Tuesday over the next 11 weeks.
