Billie Eilish Character In ‘Swarm’ Inspired by Real Cult

Billie Eilish appears in Swarm, co-created and co-executive produced by Janine Nabers and Donald Glover. The show features a slew of celebrity cameos, including Rory Culkin and Paris Jackson. Billie Eilish was definitely the cameo that has delivered one of the biggest pops.

In the show, Dre (Dominique Fishback) goes on a crime spree that at one point sets her in front of a cult led by Billie Eilish. According to creator Janine Nabers, a lot of the cult inspiration comes from NXIVM. Nabers has said Eilish’s character was inspired by that cult and its leader Keith Raniere, who was sentenced to 120 years in prison and fined $1,750,000 in the high-profile sex-trafficking case.

“There is a cult that existed in the world that was very prominent during that time,” Nabers tells THR, referencing NXIVM

“And that is the kind of true-crime element to that episode. And I think that when people think of the idea of artists or celebrities, there is this idea of thinking about the cult of Taylor Swift, or the cult of the Beatles or whatever. What we were really interested in was just seeing someone who worships at the altar of ‘something,’ and (exploring) this idea of what is the cult of the mind.”

There was definitely a lot of moments in that episode that made me wonder what cult exactly were Nabers and Glover pulling from. It’s interesting to see the real life parallels pulled from to make the show work as it is clearly a reflection of our society today. Swarm has slowly started to trend over its weekend release and you can check out or review as well on our site.
