‘The Creator’ Review [Fantastic Fest 2023]

The Creator is the latest sci-fi epic from Gareth Edwards. We had the chance to check this one out at Fantastic Fest earlier this week. I was immediately drawn to the film from the first trailer. Gareth Edwards has been a consistent director in my opinion and after watching The Creator I still believe this. The Creator stars John David Washington as Joshua an ex special forces agent grieving his wife who is sent on a mission. The mission is to go find and “Nirmata” who is responsible for the advanced A.I that threatens humanity.

I won’t go into further details as I feel it could ruin the film. Not everything is black and white, and Joshua begins to question everything he once knew. I really loved the ideas and concept the films presented. Of course, the talk about A.I is very timely in today’s world as we see the rise of ChatGPT and other A.I in our lives. However, I do think that this of course is more a story on imperialism and also immigration. The concepts and ideas as I said are interesting, but the story does jump around too much, not allowing you to care for certain aspects.

The cinematography and visuals make the film an incredible watch. There is a beautifully detailed richness to the world that the team has built. I really loved the nature and high-tech aesthetics blending into one another, making the world feel believable. I do love the grand scope of things from the film, but I feel the ideas are too big for a standalone movie. This idea is one I would have preferred to see be played out in a television show, for example. There were moments where we went from one thing to another, and I felt we hadn’t really fully explored it.

The Creator benefits from having some great actors in its cast, with John David Washington and Gemma Chan. Ken Watanabe and Madeleine Yuna Voyles are also amazing to see. It’s a grand sci-fi epic that in time I believe will be a blueprint for other films in the genre. However, the film does lack when it comes to structure and really hitting the nail on its points. Of course, we still recommend watching the film on a big screen due to how beautiful it is.

We give The Creator 3.7 out of 5
