Your Lucky Day is Dan Brown’s directorial debut. The film builds off of his short film of the same name which garnered critical acclaim. Dan returns to expand on the short with a feature starring Angus Cloud and Jessica Garza.
Your Lucky Day‘s premise deals with a group of people trying to figure out what to do with a jackpot lottery ticket. I won’t go deeper into the story, so I don’t ruin the film because it’s best to go in blind. The film has some great commentary on social class and the wealth gap. All of this results in a thriller that will keep you guessing what comes next. It also has a very grimy feeling to it, creating a sense of hopelessness.

The premise of the film is pretty simple but what adds to the film is the acting. The cast has great chemistry together and really deliver in their performances. Angus in particular really grabs you from the beginning of the film. His performance is very nuanced and will have you thinking of society. Jessica Garza progresses through the film almost becoming unrecognizable from when we first meet her. The rest of the cast are great, but these two really deliver.

I also really enjoyed the camera work that gave us a claustrophobic feeling throughout. There are moments that did take me out of the film which included some of the character’s choices. The film feels very real and raw so when characters make certain decisions it felt jarring. It can make the film feel like it’s come to a full stop, but Dan Brown is able to get the action going.
Overall, we enjoyed Your Lucky Day a thriller full of twists and turns. Although some moments did pull us out of the experience by the end, we were all the way invested. Your Lucky Day is a great debut feature film and has us excited for what Dan Brown has to offer next.
We give Your Lucky Day a 3.5/5. Check out our interview with director Dan Brown below:
