‘The Marvel’s’ Reviews Are in And It’s….

The Marvels is the latest film from Marvel after the huge success of Guardians of The Galaxy Vol 3. In a post Endgame world, Marvel has been trying to find its footing with many fans. The movies for many haven’t been the same while for others it feels like Marvel is working towards a big new world. I fall into the crowd of being excited with each new product Marvel has released. A big fan of Eternals and Doctor Strange in The Multiverse of Madness, I’ve been ready for new worlds to be explored. The trailer for The Marvels looks to promise that and so much more.

The Marvels will release this week and the review embargo has lifted so what are the critics saying? According to critics, it seems this might just be one of Marvel’s most divisive films. The reviews seem to be all over the place with some calling it fun and others a misery to watch. Check out some of the reactions from trades.

The Hollywood Reporter: “Larson, Parris and Vellani have a natural and infectious rapport. Their undeniable chemistry anchors one of the stronger threads of The Marvels,[but] The Marvels takes on more than it can responsibly handle in its brisk runtime, which means abrupt endings and discarded threads.”

Io9: “Marvel Studios’ latest film in Phase 5 of the franchise is genre-bending, mind-melding, and found-family-building joy—with an all-timer post credits scene … All in all, The Marvels is a fun cosmic chase across the stars with exciting new directions for our heroes. It’s an endearing, smartly contained popcorn flick that’s about characters first over mythology building.”

The Washington Post: “There’s a lot of fighting, and the fate of the world is said to hang in the balance. But when you look at the screen, all you see is a bunch of people trying to grab some shiny things from one another… The film progresses turgidly and mindlessly, with respite granted only by two delightful interludes.”

A lot of the film seems to be dividing fans alike from some quick social media reactions. It seems that Marvel has been paying attention as the brand has started to rebrand certain shows and movies. Echo and Blade alike are being called more grounded and edgier. I’m curious to see how The Marvels ends up performing at the box office and what Marvel does next. The film releases this Friday, and we will be sure to give our thoughts and reactions.
