‘Late Night With the Devil’ Directors Explain Using AI Art in the Film

If you have been around our channels you know we’ve been hyping up Late Night With The Devil for some time now. It was one of those films we missed at SXSW last year and have been on the hunt for ever since. We finally got the chance to watch it and absolutely loved it from beginning to end. David Dastmalchian is tremendous in this and the film has some amazing practical effects. The steam this film has going for it has been wild as well. It currently sits at a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and everyone is raving about it.

You would think there’s nothing that can stop this train? Well A.I has entered the chat. The movie apparently used A.I generated images during breaks in the movie. All of this became viral starting on the site X (formerly known as Twitter) The backlash grew quickly as many denounced the film and its use of A.I. So many couldn’t understand why not just commission some artists for the work that is so miniscule to the film already.

The directors Cameron and Colin Cairnes actually sent a statement out to Variety because of how big the controversy got. You can check out the statement below.

“In conjunction with our amazing graphics and production design team, all of whom worked tirelessly to give this film the 70s aesthetic we had always imagined, we experimented with AI for three still images which we edited further and ultimately appear as very brief interstitials in the film. We feel incredibly fortunate to have had such a talented and passionate cast, crew and producing team go above and beyond to help bring this film to life. We can’t wait for everyone to see it for themselves this weekend.”

Late Night With The Devil is a great film and one that’s worth seeing in my opinion However, I also have to acknowledge that the use of A.I is bleak and a shame especially for an indie film. It’s a tricky situation as I don’t think the crew and cast deserve the backlash for it. David in particular is just amazing to see and the film is just that good.

If you decide to watch or not watch the film that’s totally up to you. In the end I think A.I just needs regulations for the future.

What do you think about Late Night With The Devil using A.I?
