David Castañeda to Potentially Land Lead Role in Chalino Sanchez in Biopic ‘Chalino’

A Chalino Sanchez biopic that has been in the works for some time now, and there’s finally been an update on the film.

The new indie film Chalino will tell the story of Rosalino Sánchez Félix, better known as Chalino and “El Rey del Corrido,” a musician who contributed to the popularity of the Regional music subgenre Narcocorridos. According to Deadline, David Castañeda (The Umbrella AcademyBallerina) is the standout for the role, but no deal has been signed yet.

The project was born at the 2020 Sundance Screenwriters and Directors Labs, where writer Jesus Celaya earned the Latinx Fellowship for his script. Celaya penned the feature from Storyboard and will direct it. The film is set to feature Chalino’s music throughout.

Sánchez was born in Sinaloa, where he was surrounded by violence. Eventually moving to Los Angeles, where he worked various jobs. While serving an eight-month sentence, Sánchez practiced music. Upon his release, he continued his music career where he brought voice to the everyday man. Despite finding success, Chalino couldn’t escape the violence, and in 1992 was shot and killed at the age of 31.

Castañeda is best known for his role as Diego Hargreeves in the Netflix series The Umbrella Academy. Additional TV credits include roles in Most Dangerous Games, based on the Richard Connell short story of the same name; and most recently in an episode of Peacock’s hit series Poker Face, created by Rian Johnson and starring Natasha Lyonne. Castañeda will also appear in the film Ballerina.
