‘The Fall Guy’ Review | A Love Letter to Stunt Crews

The Fall Guy is the latest film from David Leitch starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt. The film follows stunt guy Colt (Gosling) as they try to get their life together back together. A film that is loosely based on the hit tv show of the same name, The Fall Guy is an ode to the stunt people that make the beloved blockbuster film possible.

The Fall Guy revolves around Colt Seavers, a stunt performer reuniting with his ex-Jody Moreno on the set of her directorial debut. Colt walks into a mess as the leading man Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), whom Colt had doubled for long ago, is missing. The executive producer Gail (Hannah Waddingham) then tasks Colt to find the missing movie star before the production is shut down. We soon see as with anyone whose made a movie, easier said than done.

Leitch is no stranger to the action scene as a former stunt man himself and also with his experience directing films like Atomic Blonde and Deadpool 2. The Fall Guy is clearly a love letter to the stunt people that make the movies that much bigger. I was so entranced by the film’s high octane feel as well as the larger-than-life stunts. There’s so much to admire and applaud throughout, that it could be its own article. I mean, they even broke a Guiness World Record during production for most barrel rolls from a car! The movie feels like a classic blockbuster as well but at the same time kept things fresh with its actors and storylines.

Gosling and Blunt both have tremendous chemistry right from the get-go as the film showcases the ups and downs of their relationship. Ryan Gosling who just came off from leading the Barbie movie last year as Ken is now playing Colt Seavers who could very well be Ken’s older brother. Gosling really knows how to play the big action star but at the same time show some humility and plenty of comedy chops. There wasn’t a moment that Colt wasn’t making me laugh. Emily Blunt plays Jody Moreno a character that is fearless and doesn’t hold back on what she wants. I really enjoyed the performance from Blunt and feel her and Ryan bounced off one another very well. They truly lead the film and make it feel that much bigger with their chemistry.

The rest of the cast which consists of Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Winston Duke, and Stephanie Hsu are also great. We get to see sides of all three that we hadn’t really gotten a chance to see yet. Winston Duke and Ryan Gosling have a great buddy comedy duo vibe to them and make one of the best sequences of the film. Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the egotistical Ryder as well countered with Ryan Gosling’s Colt make for some of the funniest exchanges throughout. Hsu’s role is small but also showcases that the world might be ready to see Stephanie in some more action roles. There was never a dull moment between the ensemble cast and it’s a testament to the talent they all share.

Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt as the two leads here are undeniably what carry the film forward. There are times during the film especially its first act where it stumbles and is a victim of its own pacing. It can’t make up its mind of what it wants to be and thus loses steam. We, however, have Gosling and Blunt not only saving the day in the film but the film itself. The Fall Guy is also a little too long for its own good. The film started to feel a bit flat but the last third of the movie really brings it back together. It offers some of the most excitement and fun at a theater all year!

Overall, The Fall Guy is without a doubt is the most fun theater experience! It’s packed with some breathtaking action sequences and also laugh-out-loud comedy bits. Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt’s relationship mesmerizes you with the amount of chemistry between the two. However, it’s pacing, and length can get in its way and have the movie stumbling. The Fall Guy can get lost in its own storyline and ends up doing too much at times. The Fall Guy although it stumbles at times is able to be saved by its ensemble cast and high octane action sequences. It makes up for it so much in its final act that is just something to be seen on the big screen!

We give The Fall Guy a 3.75/5.

  1. An excellent review. I am definitely keen to watch this movie soon. I’m a massive fan of Ryan Gosling who has proven to be a fantastic actor. Whether it’s drama, comedies or musicals, he has proven he can make engaging movies in practically every genre. I adore his performance as a jazz artist in “La La Land”. Here’s why I adore that film:
