Twisters is the stand-alone legacy sequel to the 1996 classic Twister with Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt. In the 2024 film we have an ensemble cast that includes Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perrea, David Corenswet, Sasha Lane and Katy M. O’Brian. Twisters follows Kate Cooper (Daisy Edgar-Jones) who is haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado. After some time, Kate decides to come back to storm chasing after her friend Javi (Anthony Ramos) brings her back. While returning to storm chasing, Kate meets Tyler Owens (Glen Powell), a charming but reckless social-media superstar who thrives on posting his storm-chasing adventures. As storm season intensifies, Kate, Tyler and their competing teams find themselves in a fight for their lives as multiple systems converge over central Oklahoma.

I’ll tell you the truth, I wasn’t sure we needed another film or follow up to Twister. I went into this film not expecting much because of that but let me tell you I came out with so much energy after. Twisters not only pushes the franchise forward, but it also brings this ensemble cast front and center. Lee Isaac Chung is the director, and you can really tell the artistic direction that Chung brings to the film. Twisters is not just a fun thrill ride but also a film with so much heart throughout. All of this is done so effectively against the backdrop of the South-Central United States. Lee packs the film with so much of the area’s culture to truly set the tone. A bumping soundtrack with subtle but impactful performances from the ensemble and we have ourselves a true blockbuster.

The film’s cast is so well rounded with each actor giving stellar performances. Of course, the leads here Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, and Anthony Ramos are really the driving force. Glen Powell in particular shifts the movie when he first appears. There is just so much charisma from Powell that it just oozes through the screen. Ramos and Jones share some of the more dramatic scenes in the film together. I really enjoyed seeing both actors share the screen together alongside Powell.

Twisters of course wouldn’t be a film without the twisters, and they sure pack them here. I was amazed at how much spectacle was truly shown from the film. The moments in which we see these forces of nature touch down on our characters are nail biting. In Twisters they do an amazing job of putting you right in the middle of all this. I was really holding my breath in some of these insane scenes wondering if our characters would make it out unscathed. All of this is also possible due to the incredible set designs that truly showcase the destruction. The opening scene is an all time for the stress it caused in showing just how horrifying things can get during a storm.

The soundtrack to the film in itself felt like a character on its own. It really helped to establish just where we were. Of course, the location is vital to the story as the hub for all of these twisters to show up. I found myself seeking out the soundtrack as soon as the film was over. I’m someone who truly appreciates when a filmmaker just lets the soundtrack play with their images. In Twisters, Lee Isaac Chung does this so effortlessly to create some truly iconic imagery. I’m excited to rewatch so many of these scenes and get that same thrill and panic I got the first time.

Twisters all in all is a perfect blockbuster especially for the whole family. I enjoyed watching the characters come full circle with their respective arcs. There are times when the film can feel a bit repetitive with its structure especially the storm chasing. Twisters‘ story, although it is compelling, could have set up some characters a bit more. However, the dynamic and very charming characters make it an exhilarating experience. I definitely think this is the blockbuster movie we’ve been missing. I am happy to say Twisters is one of the best times in the theater all year.

We Give Twisters a 4/5.

  1. An excellent review. I recently had a chance to watch this movie and really enjoyed it. It’s a spectacular disaster blockbuster. I thought it was a massive improvement on the 1996 movie which I found very overrated. This film found a balance between story and action that the original didn’t have. It was a better film in this regard.

    Here’s why I loved it:
