The Match Factory has acquired four newly 4K-restored feature films by Palme d’Or-winning Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul.

The four films span key titles from across the director’s career: Blissfully Yours (2002), winner of the Un Certain Regard Prize at the Cannes Film Festival; Tropical Malady (2004), winner of the Cannes Jury Prize; Syndromes and a Century (2006), which premiered in Competition at the Venice Film Festival; and Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (2010), winner of the Cannes Palme d’Or.

The Match Factory holds rights worldwide, excluding North America, the UK, Ireland, Japan, Switzerland and Thailand.

These four titles join three of Weerasethakul’s other feature films already handled by The Match Factory: Mekong Hotel (2012), Cemetery of Splendour (2015), and Memoria (2021), which won the Jury Prize at Cannes, and stars Tilda Swinton.

The Match Factory will officially launch international sales for the newly restored titles at the upcoming Venice International Film Festival. The 4K restorations were personally supervised by Weerasethakul and feature remastered and remixed audio, with four new key artworks.

The restorations were made possible through the support of the Thai Film Archive, MoMA, Strand Releasing, Tomo Suzuki, Mehelli Modi and Second Run, and Cinémathèque Suisse, White Light Studio, 185 films and Kick The Machine.

Apichatpong Weerasethakul has directed eight feature films alongside short films, video installations, and live performances. His moving-image work has been featured at international film festivals and presented in retrospectives at contemporary art institutions, including Tate Modern, the Centre Pompidou, and MoMA. Operating outside the Thai commercial studio system, he produces his projects through his company Kick the Machine Films, which Weerasethakul founded in 1999 to support independent and experimental cinema.
